Family Violence Project (Working with Adolescents to Prevent Family Violence)

This program began in 2000 as a result of a report by leading WA criminal justice researcher Dr Harry Blagg into family violence. Derby was one of the towns selected to implement the trial project with the aim of increasing awareness of domestic violence and to develop culturally appropriate remedies.

A Project Officer was employed by the Shire to implement the project, which has been responsible for creating a Young Women’s Centre and a Men's Centre in Derby, and also created the same centres at Mowanjum Aboriginal Community.

Due to the success of the program, which is now known as the Jayida Burru Abuse and Violence Prevention Forum, funding for the original 12-month project has been extended to 30 June, 2007.

The Community Development Officer is located in the Shire Administration Building on Loch Street. The Community Development Officer provides strategic support across the Community Development Branch to ensure residents get the most out of the shire’s many facilities. This includes coordinating and implementing programs and events in the areas of sport and recreation, child care, youth, culture, and library and information services.

Marooloo Youth Services operates from the Derby Youth Centre in Hardman Street.  Marooloo is a Mangala name that means ‘kids care for this place’. Permission has been given by senior Mangala men and women to use this word.

The service provides ‘at risk’ young people aged 12-18 years with opportunities to socialise and develop knowledge and skills in a safe and supportive environment. We promote mutual respect, healthy lifestyle choices, personal rights and responsibilities.

This service is located at the Derby Youth Centre which is situated on the corner of Hardman and Clarendon St and is managed by the Shire’s Youth Services Coordinator.

The centre is open to the public from 2pm to 5pm weekdays and until 7pm on Fridays. Times may vary during certain periods of the year so please contact the Youth Service Coordinator on (08) 9191 0999 for details. A comprehensive holiday program is also offered during school holidays.
