Town Ovals
The Derby Town Oval has been top dressed and laser levelled which has improved the playing surface and player safety levels. It also ensures that our playing field is commensurate with those in Broome, which is an important commitment to the participation of Derby teams in the West Kimberley Football Association.
The improvements to the playing surface means that the oval will no longer be available to travelling fairs and circuses as a venue. The Shire in partnership with the West Kimberley Turf Club has earmarked an area near the racecourse as a future venue. Until that area is developed, fairs will use the concourse opposite the Civic Centre.
Both the Derby and Fitzroy Crossing Town Ovals have had the installation of tower lighting in 2004. These facilities benefit the existing sporting clubs such as the cricket and football teams and will encourage others to start new sporting competitions. The lighting is ideal for playing sports in the wet season as playing in the evening and night is a lot cooler.
