The State Emergency Service (SES) is the Hazard Management Authority for emergency situations such as flood, cyclone, storm damage, tsunami and earthquake.
The SES also responds to assist other organizations in general rescue situations such as finding missing persons andforsensic search
The SES Fitzroy Crossing Volunteer Unit has members who are trained to respond in these situations within the Fitzroy Crossing Police District. The volunteers are available to assist the community in emergencies such as cyclone and storm damage clean up, general rescue and flood threat assistance. Training for these events includes: - Communications - radio voice procedures and use of equipment
- Map reading and navigation
- General rescue
- 4WD techniques and recovery
- Working in an emergency operations centre
- Flood boat operation
The Unit welcomes interested new members who are dedicated and willing to volunteer their precious time to help the community.

Bush fires are a major threat to the pastoral industry and the ecology of the Kimberley. Every year more and more of the countryside is burnt in wildfires. To protect the environment, controlled burning is conducted between April and June under direction of the Bush Fire Service. All wild fires should be reported to the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley.
