Library and Information Services
The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley provides Library and Information Services through the Derby and Fitzroy Crossing Public Libraries. Our objective is to provide all residents of the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley with access to library resources and services which meet the various information, recreation and education needs within our community.
The staff, buildings, some local stock and services are funded by the Shire while the State Library of Western Australia (SLWA) funds the major proportion of library stock. The State Library maintains the State Public Library Network, ensuring that our stock is updated regularly.
Membership
Membership is free to permanent residents of the Shire. Just bring along a document with your current address on it. e.g. Post Office Box Form, Health Care Card or Driver's Licence. If you are under 18 years of age your parent or guardian must sign for you when you join.
Visitors and temporary residents and others with no permanent address will be required to pay a refundable deposit.
Library Resources
Derby and Fitzroy Libraries have a combined stock of over 15,000 paperback, hardback and large print volumes which provides a great selection of fiction for all ages and tastes as well as a wide range of non-fiction covering a myriad of topics for adults and children.
- Books on Tape and CD - great for long days in the car
- Videos - for adults and children including feature films, TV series, documentaries, comedies, do-it-yourself, exercise, music and cartoons for adults and children.
- CD-Roms for entertainment and education
- Popular magazines and newspapers.
- Telephone books - Western Australian and Australian cities.
- Reference Collections - Find the answer to your question in our encyclopedia, almanacs, who's who directories, atlases and much more.
- Local Studies collection including books, reports, photographs and cuttings relating to the environment, people, development and history of Derby and the West Kimberley. The cuttings and photographs are indexed on our local studies databases.
- Read Write Now collection book and cassette sets and readers for adults and children wishing to improve their literacy skills.
- Government information including social and environmental reports, statistics, annual reports and newsletters
Library Services- Reader assistance - Request and Interlibrary Loan Service. If you don't find what you need ask the library staff. We are trained to help you get the best out of the library resources available. If an item you require is on loan you can place a reservation on it. If the item you want is not in stock we will try to obtain it from the State Library Network.
- Mail loans to remote stations and communities - Outward mail is paid by the Library and return mail is paid by the library clients.
- Internet access for searching and printing. We can help you learn to surf the internet. Make a booking and see how easy it is.
- Author visits, workshops, children's activities, class visits, story telling - Both Derby and Fitzroy Libraries host adult and children's author visits, workshops, library visits for local and community schools; provide storytelling to local preschools and conduct holiday activities for children.
- Community Information and Notice Boards - Advertise your community group's activity or local event at the library. Catch up on the Council minutes or local newspapers or state-wide newsletters for special interest groups
- Displays - The libraries have regular displays promoting resources in the libraries, local and state government services, particular weekly themes and community groups. We welcome displays from local groups promoting services etc.
