Dog ControlDog and Animal Control – Dog Act 1976
The law requires that all dogs in the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley over the age of three (3) months old must be registered. Registrations must be in the name of the person over 18 years of age. All dog registrations are due on the 1st November of each year, with options of one (1) or three (3) year terms. Dog registrations can be made through the Shire Administration Office or Development Services Office both located in Loch Street, Derby and at the Fitzroy Crossing Visitor Centre, Corner Great Northern Highway and Forrest Road, Fitzroy Crossing.

Pensioner and Senior Citizens will receive a 50% discount on the above prices when showing their Pension or Senior Citizen Cards.
Dog Exercise AreasThe Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has introduced Dog exercise areas in and around Derby and Fitzroy Crossing to enable Dog owners to walk their Dog’s off the lead without posing a problem to other pedestrians or traffic. This does not restrict you from walking your Dog in other areas as long as the animal is on a lead. Failure to do so could result in a fine.
Control of Dogs in exercise areas:
- A Greyhound is not permitted in an exercise area.
- A Dog can be off a lead whilst accompanied by a competent person who is in reasonable proximity to the Dog.
- A competent person is a person who is liable for the control of the Dog and is capable of controlling it.
- A competent person is a person who is carrying and capable of attaching a chain, cord, leash, or harness and have sufficient strength fot the purpose of controlling the Dog.
Exercise Areas Within the townsite of Derby:
The area known as Reserve R.34220 along the south western aspect of town adjacent to the marsh that extends from the intersection of Monger Street and Rowan Street due south to the Derby Waste Management Facility.
The area know as Reserve R.37864 along the north eastern aspect of town adjacent to the marsh that extends from the intersection of Villiers Street and Elder Street due east to the intersection of Villiers Street and Swain Street.
The northern aspect of the area known as Reserve R.23127 (racecourse and recreation) bounded by Steel Street to the east, Reserve R.24904 to the west and limited to 60 metres due south from northern boundary of Reserve R.23127.
Within the townsite of Fitzroy Crossing: The area of land bounded by Forrest Road, Brooking Creek, Fitzroy River, Great Northern Highway, Emmanuel Way and Bell Road.

PoundThe pound is located at the Shire Depot on the Corner of Steele and Le Leivere Streets, Derby and in Emanuel Way Fitzroy Crossing. Opening hours are from 7.45am to 4.30pm.
To release a dog from the pound, a $40.00 penalty is incurred as well as a sustenance fee of $10.00 for everyday the dog was kept in the pound plus registration fees if the dog is unregistered.
Pound fees can be paid at the Shire Administration Office, or Development Services Office, both located in Loch Street, Derby, or at the Fitzroy Crossing Visitor Centre, Corner Great Northern Highway and Forrest Road, Fitzroy Crossing.
If a dog is not claimed after being held for 72 hours, it may be destroyed or sold.
