Carmen comes to Derby15th August 2007 West Kimberley residents and visitors will have a rare opportunity to see one of the world’s best-loved operas in their home town when a cast of Australia’s finest emerging opera stars from Opera Australia’s Oz Opera performs Carmen at the Derby Recreation Centre on Thursday, 30 August. The Carmen performance is proudly supported by the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley as part of a six-week tour of local communities across Northern Territory and Western Australia sponsored by Australia Post. Derby first-timers and opera buffs will delight in the emotional performance of Carmen, which is famous for arias including the Toreador’s Song, the Flower Song and the famous Habañera. Shire President Elsia Archer said West Kimberley residents were fortunate to have such a magnificent opera come to Derby. “The production will be held outdoors under the covered courts and will provide West Kimberley residents and visitors with an opportunity to enjoy the type of entertainment usually only reserved for city people,” Cr Archer said. “Tickets range from Gold to Family and have been kept affordable to ensure everyone gets a chance to be a part of this unique experience. But seats are limited so get in early.” Directed by Adam Cook and designed by Stephen Curtis, Carmen is set in 1950s Seville and features a cast of smugglers, gypsies, soldiers and a bull-fighter. Sung in English, Carmen tells the story of a headstrong factory girl who seduces a young soldier with tragic results. The performance is accompanied by a chamber orchestra of 11 musicians, conducted by Julia de Plater, and performed by a stellar cast of 14 opera singers including Sian Pendry and Tania Ferris as Carmen, Stephen Smith and Bradley Daley as Don José, and Rohan Thatcher and Francesco Fabris as Escamillo. Opera Australia’s Oz Opera will perform Carmen at the Derby Recreation Centre on Thursday, 30 August at 8.00pm. Gates open from 6pm and bar facilities will be available. Guests are welcome to BYO picnic to enjoy before the show. No BYO alcohol. Tickets are $50 for Gold tickets, which includes premium reserved seating and a complimentary champagne and canapés at the Derby Sportsmen’s Club before the show; $30 for Silver (reserved seating); $15 for concession card holders; and $70 for Family (two adults, two children in unreserved seating).
