MEDIA RELEASE - Shire of Derby/West Kimberley to Identify Options for Point Torment Site

19th August 2008

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley will carry out a study to assess industry requirements for possible industrial and supply base facilities at Point Torment.

Shire President Elsia Archer said that the assessment was part of the Shire’s ongoing work to identify suitable sites for strategic development in the region. She said that the Shire had been investigating the feasibility of an industry support base at Point Torment for some years and that industry consultation was the next logical step in terms of this work.

“With the major gas developments in the Derby/West Kimberley region coming on stream along with the other resource sector and primary industry requirements, there is clearly a need for industrial support facilities within our region”, Cr Archer said.

“The work we are doing in relation to Point Torment will help us to understand the extent of demand from industry and will be an important first stage in identifying suitable options.”

Cr Archer said the early initiative from the Shire would ensure that the region benefited from resource sector developments and that those benefits would flow to the local businesses and the community generally. She added that the Shire was committed to ensuring that any development options were fully considered from an environmental, community and Indigenous heritage perspective.

“At this stage we are still assessing options, but if there is an intention to proceed with any development, we will immediately begin a comprehensive process of consultation to ensure that indigenous heritage and environmental values are fully respected and protected,” Cr Archer concluded.
