Council News - August 2009Local Government Election - Call For Nominations26th August 2009 Nominations are called for our Local Government Election, to be held on Saturday 17 October 2009 to fill vacancies on the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley. You can be involved in running an organisation with the responsibility of making decisions that have a major impact on our lifestyle. As a representative of your community, you will find the role enjoyable, challenging and stimulating with involvement in matters as diverse as recreation, libraries, town planning, health, roads and more. Meeting fees and some expenses are paid. If you want to make a difference in your community and have a say in local decision-making, stand for election as a local government councillor. VacanciesDistrict - four vacancies - 4 year terms Who Can Nominate Any person who is an Australian Citizen over the age of 18 years who is an elector of the district and is not disqualified under Local Government Act 1995 may nominate for Council. Nomination Time and Place• Nominations for vacancies open on Thursday 3 September 2009 • Nominations must be lodged by 4:00pm Thursday 10 September 2009 Nominations must be lodged with the Returning Officer at any time during the above period at the Shire of Derby West/Kimberley Administration Office. Nomination RequirementsCandidates are required to lodge with the Returning Officer: • A completed nomination in the prescribed form signed and witnessed. • A single A4 page profile containing not more than 150 words of biographical information about the proposed candidate and statements of the candidate’s policies or beliefs. • A nomination deposit of $80 (cash, or postal order, or bank cheque subject to Returning Officer approval). • A recent passport-sized photograph (optional). Where an agent lodges a nomination on a candidate’s behalf, it must be in the prescribed form with a written authorisation signed by the candidate. The documents may be hand delivered, posted or faxed to the Returning Officer and must be received by the close of nominations. Community Playground and Youth Spaces Survey17th August 2009 The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is committed to improving the quality of life for the residents of Derby and the surrounding area. Community services and facilities are an important part of their long term plans. The Community Development Department is seeking comments from the local community on how playgrounds and youth spaces are used and on the future management of these facilities. The following survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and we would appreciate having your feedback to enable us to better plan the future of playgrounds and youth spaces. We put a high value on public participation, so please fill out and return this survey by 31st August 2009.
