Academic Scholarship Opportunity

Applications open for 2009 Local Government Academic Scholarship

Have you ever considered a career in local government?

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is calling for applications for its 2009 Local Government Academic Scholarship which provides financial assistance for residents of the Shire to study a university degree relevant to Local Government.

The value of the scholarship is approximately $10,000 per calendar year for full-time students to cover all HECS costs plus a minor living allowance. It is open to both Year 12 leavers and mature age students who have not studied at university before.

Shire President Elsia Archer said this is the second year the Shire had offered the scholarship which was designed to develop a career path for local youth and assist in creating a future for them in the local government district.

“The workforce employed by the Shire is diverse with approximately 85 staff spanning more than 118,000 square kilometres,” Cr Archer said.

“The changing working environment requires more staff to have tertiary qualifications and with support, the Shire believes that local youth will potentially be able to fill many of these roles.”

Areas of study can be in:

• Commerce (accounting/management)
• Engineering
• Environmental Health
• Information Technology

• Recreation Management
• Community Development
• Town Planning

The successful applicant is required to commit to working for the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley for 12 months after completing their degree.

Cr Archer said with many exciting projects planned for the Shire, including the construction of a $150M regional prison by 2011, employment with the Shire would offer exciting career prospects for local residents.

“I would encourage anyone contemplating attending university to apply for the Shire’s 2009 Local Government Academic Scholarship Program,” Cr Archer said.

“With your HECS costs covered, and a guarantee of employment at the conclusion of your degree, it is a great way to obtain qualifications in a Local Government-related field and contribute to your local region.”

Scholarship guidelines and application forms can be downloaded from the Shire’s website at www.sdwk.wa.gov.au or phone (08) 9191 0999 to arrange to have one sent to you.

Ends.
