Derby Export Facility - Lead and Zinc

13th July 2007

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley yesterday received notification via a media statement from Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) that there were some elevated levels of Lead and Zinc in and around the Derby Export facility.

“At no stage were we notified of any concerns regarding heavy metal levels at the Derby Port by the DEC and to think that such an important and emotive issue was not communicated to the Council by DEC we find totally irresponsible” stated John Pearson, Chief Executive Officer for the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley.

“To our knowledge Lennard Shelf Pty Ltd has met all its statutory requirements and for the DEC to release information to the public about elevated heavy metal levels without any specifics and then refuse to provide the tests results marginalises the community and creates unwarranted concerns pending full disclosure of the facts” continued Mr Pearson.

We have been led to believe that whilst some levels may be higher than anticipated they as yet do not cause any health concerns to the public but should people have any concerns they should contact the DEC directly.
