Fitzroy Crossing community pull together in wake of fire.Time of issue: 4.50pm Date of issue: 8 July 2009 A fire early this morning at Tarunda Shopping Centre in Fitzroy Crossing has caused more than $3 million damage. The fire has affected the supermarket and attached businesses including a video store, takeaway shop, post office and government offices. Shire of Derby West Kimberley Chief Executive Officer Shane Burge reassured the community that there are sufficient supplies in town. “There is enough food in town, with three outlets providing grocery items, and further stocks will be arriving on Monday,” Mr Burge said. “We just ask that people are conservative when making purchases and only buy what they need. “Any tourists that plan to travel through Fitzroy Crossing in the coming days should stock up before they arrive and make sure they have enough food for their time in town. “Community members are invited to come along to the town meeting at Fitzroy Crossing Recreation Centre at 10am tomorrow morning.” Fifteen Volunteer Emergency Service firefighters from Fitzroy Crossing and many community members helped put out the fire. Mr Burge praised the efforts of volunteers and the community. “The local volunteer firefighters did a great job and worked hard to get the fire under control,” he said. “The community spirit of the town has really shone through and everyone has been helping each other out.” The fire started at 7am this morning and was under control at 11am. The cause of the fire is being investigated by FESA and the Police Arson Squad. END
