CALL FOR ENTRIES - KIMBERLEY ART PRIZE

13th June 2007

Two rare Wandjina paintings will be the star attraction when the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley presents the acquisitive 2007 Kimberley Art Prize on Saturday, July 14.

The two significant paintings are by Mowanjum artist Charlie Numblemoore (dec.) and date back to the late 1960s. They were acquired by the Shire through a previous Kimberley Art Prize and were uncovered from storage in the Derby Public Library earlier this year.

Shire President Elsia Archer said the paintings had since been framed and put on display at Linneys of Broome but would make a special return to Derby for the occasion of the 37th annual Kimberley Art Prize.

“The Shire has entered an agreement with Linneys to display the rare and valuable paintings at Linneys of Broome because it can provide the required levels of security and climate control,” Cr Archer said.

“But in celebration of Derby’s rich artistic heritage, we are excited to announce that the paintings will make a brief return to Derby to take centre stage at the opening of this year’s Kimberley Art Prize.”

The 37th annual Kimberley Art Prize this year carries an overall cash prize of $8000 – the biggest in its history thanks to major sponsors the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley and Inpex Browse Pty Ltd.

Other sponsors of this year’s prize are Arc Energy Pty Ltd, Art House Broome, Denise Walker Art, Gecko Gallery, Monsoon Gallery, Jila Gallery and a local art patron.

Categories include Indigenous, Oils & Acrylics, Watercolours & Pastels, Drawing & Mixed Media, Photography, Young People’s, People’s Choice and Open. The Open category is a new addition to the event and is open to artists from outside the Kimberley.

Cr Archer said the Shire hoped the increased prize money and expanded categories would encourage more people to enter this year’s art prize.

“Over the past 37 years the Kimberley Art Prize has grown to be one of the most highly regarded art prizes in WA and attracted the work of many high profile Kimberley artists,” Cr Archer said.

“I have no doubt that that trend will continue in 2007 and present us with the most inspiring and creative Kimberley Art Prize yet.”

Entries for the 2007 Kimberley Art Prize close on Monday, July 9. Entry forms are available from Kimberley shire offices and libraries and at www.sdwk.wa.gov.au.

This year’s award will be judged by a panel of three judges, including art critic, consultant and KURB Gallery Director Dr David Bromfield.

Opening Night will be held from 6.30pm on Saturday, July 14. Entry is by gold coin donation and all art works will be for sale. The exhibition runs from Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 20 as part of Derby’s Boab Festival.

VEHICLE ACCESS TO DERBY JETTY

5th June 2007

Shire President, Elsia Archer has stated that there is no intention to change Council’s position regarding vehicle restriction on the Derby jetty. As of 1st June, 2007, the jetty is closed to unauthorised vehicles between the hours of 5pm and 6am.

Gates/bollards will be installed where the jetty commences and this work will be undertaken as soon as the materials arrive.

“The Shire’s prime responsibility is the safety of people in our community and Council would be viewed as extremely reckless in not addressing the serious safety concerns on the Derby jetty”, Cr. Archer stated.

“Unfortunately, if an accident happens, it may not necessarily be the driver of a vehicle who is hurt, it could be a child and the Shire does not want to have blood on its hands by neglecting to act .  In the event of a serious accident or fatality, it would be necessary to close the jetty permanently to unauthorised access and that is not what we want”, Cr. Archer continued.

“This decision has also been welcomed by some.  The restriction is for vehicles only and the restriction allows greater pedestrian access without fear of being hit by vehicle traffic. Fishing and other recreational activities are still welcome.  It is hoped that we can put our differences aside and work together to improve the safety of all our jetty users.  Safety is the Council’s prime concern.”

The current restriction may be reviewed in the future as the need arises.

John Pearson,
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
