MEDIA RELEASE: CALL FOR ENTRIES - KIMBERLEY ART PRIZE

1st May 2008

Two rare Wandjina paintings will be the star attraction when the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley presents the acquisitive 2008 Kimberley Art Prize on Saturday, July 12.

The two significant paintings are by Mowanjum artist Charlie Numblemoore (dec.) and date back to the late 1960s. They were acquired by the Shire through a previous Kimberley Art Prize and were uncovered from storage in the Derby Public Library earlier this year.

Shire President Elsia Archer said the paintings had since been framed and put on display at Linneys of Broome but would make a special return to Derby for the occasion of the 38th annual Kimberley Art Prize.

“The Shire has entered an agreement with Linneys to display the rare and valuable paintings at Linneys of Broome because it can provide the required levels of security and climate control,” Cr Archer said.

“But in celebration of Derby’s rich artistic heritage, we are excited to announce that the paintings will make a brief return to Derby to take centre stage at the opening of this year’s Kimberley Art Prize.”

The 38th annual Kimberley Art Prize this year carries an overall cash prize of $8000 – thanks to major sponsors the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley and Mt Gibson Iron Ltd and BGC.

Other sponsors of this year’s prize are TAFE WA Kimberley, Arc Energy Pty Ltd, Art House Broome, Denise Walker Art, Gecko Gallery, Monsoon Gallery, lennardshelf, Inpex Browse Ltd, Kimberley Diamond Company.

Categories include Overall Winner, Indigenous, Oils & Acrylics, Watercolours & Pastels, Drawing & Mixed Media, Photography, Young People’s (artists 13 to18 years), People’s Choice and Non-Kimberley (open) – All mediums. The Non-Kimberley (open) category is open to artists who are not a bona fide Kimberley resident.

“Over the past 38 years the Kimberley Art Prize has grown to be one of the most highly regarded art prizes in WA and attracted the work of many high profile Kimberley artists,” Cr Archer said.

“I have no doubt that that trend will continue in 2008 and present us with the most inspiring and creative Kimberley Art Prize yet.”

Entries for the 2008 Kimberley Art Prize close on Friday, July 4. Entry forms are available from Kimberley Shire offices and libraries and can be downloaded by clicking HERE
