Council News - October 2007Derby recognised for best practice in heart health30th October 2007 The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has won a State Award for supporting its residents to improve their heart health. The Shire has been awarded a 2007 Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Award for its role in staging the 2006 Monster Pedometer Challenge. The Shire won the Programs that Promote Healthy Weight category of the awards, which recognise the outstanding achievements of local government authorities that have planned and implemented projects, policies and programs that continue the fight against cardiovascular disease - Australia's leading cause of death. The Monster Pedometer Challenge was held in Derby from 15 May to 25 June 2006 as a way of encouraging residents to increase their levels of physical activity. The challenge was driven by staff from the Kimberley Population Health Unit, Derby Aboriginal Health Service, the Shire of Derby/ West Kimberley and local volunteers, with support from many local businesses and organisations. More than 300 people of all ages took part in the six-week challenge in which prizes were given to teams and individuals who consistently improved or who achieved more than 10,000 steps a day. So popular was the challenge that a Derby Physical Activity Reference Group has since been established to develop more opportunities for physical activity in Derby, including a 2007 Pedometer Challenge. Shire President Elsia Archer said the Pedometer Challenge had succeeded in motivating many Derby people to increase their levels of physical activity. “At first, many people – including me – didn’t even know what a pedometer was,” Councillor Archer said. “But it didn’t take long for everyone to start getting competitive and looking for ways they could increase their daily tally.” “This award is wonderful recognition for everyone who was involved in the Pedometer Challenge, particularly those people involved in organising the event. It is a credit to their hard work and to the willingness of the Derby community to try something new.” Heart Foundation Chief Executive Maurice Swanson said the Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards celebrated the work of local government authorities to promote and improve heart health in their communities. “Local government plays a pivotal role in introducing structural change, implementing policies and creating supportive environments which allow people to be physically active, reduce smoking and improve their nutrition,” Mr Swanson said. “All the WA winners in these awards have shown their commitment to creating supportive environments to promote better health and reduce the risk of chronic conditions.” The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley received its award at a special presentation on October 23 in Derby. Other award winners were: the City of Cockburn in the Programs that Improve Heart Health in Priority Groups category for its Youth Active Program; and the Shire of Manjimup in the Provision and Use of Facilities to Improve Heart Health category for the health and wellbeing program run at its Regional Aquacentre. Manjimup also won the West Australian Overall Award. Ends. Photos from the presentation are available on request. Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Supports Inpex on Maret Islands26th October 2007 Media Release Shire Of Derby/West Kimberley Supports Inpex on Maret Islands On 25th October, 2007, Council formally confirmed its support for Inpex and its potential use of the Maret Islands north east of Derby for the establishment of a gas processing plant. Significant gas resources have recently been highlighted in the Browse Basin and Inpex is a major player in the harvesting of those resources. Company representatives have regularly met with and kept Council well informed of their plans and also conducted regular community consultation explaining the project. Whilst there are a number of environmental clearances required for the development of the site, Council has, from the outset, indicated its support for Inpex subject to those clearances being approved by the State. “Inpex has always maintained its intention to support and become actively involved in the community should the Maret Islands location be successful and this will result in increases in population and associated air, health and education services with every likelihood of more industry support services” Councillor Archer stated. “The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is constantly pursuing goals which will lead to greater social and economic prosperity for our community and is pleased to support Inpex on its present course.”
Election of Shire President and Deputy President26th October 2007 Media Release Election of Shire President and Deputy President At its Ordinary Meeting on 25th October, 2007, Councillor Elsia Archer was re-elected unopposed as Shire President. Councillor Archer has served as Shire President since 2001 and her ongoing commitment to the job has seen several major projects come to fruition with her at the helm. At the same time, Councillor Geoff Haerewa was elected as Deputy President. Councillor Haerewa was elected to Council in 2005. “Geoff’s keen interest in the community, coupled with his energy and enthusiasm will stand him in good stead as the Deputy President” Councillor Archer stated. “I must now state a formal and sincere vote of thanks to both Paul White, our outgoing Deputy President who used his best endeavors to progress our community and the Shire as a whole and to Geoff Davis who served eight years on Council and until recently, was the sole Council representative based in Fitzroy Crossing. Geoff worked tirelessly to improve facilities and conditions in his town, particularly for young people. Both former Councillors will be missed as both were extremely supportive and contributed significantly to the positioning of our Shire today.” Councillor Archer also offered her congratulations to Jack Burton and Annette Kogolo on successfully entering Council for the first time. “All Councillors and staff work as a close team and I encourage all new Councillors to continue this path. I also congratulate Councillors Prouse, Sullivan and Travers on their reelection” Councillor Archer continued. “I am also very conscious of all the hard work that our staff tirelessly deliver to better our community. As elected members we set the strategic and policy framework but without our staff and their leadership it could never be achieved. As Councillors we fully support our staff and thank them for all their efforts.” In these challenging times, the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has been most fortunate in the quality and dedication of its elected members and it is certain that with Councillor Archer and Councillor Haerewa at the helm, the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley will continue to develop and prosper.
