Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Announces New Chief Executive Officer

9th September 2005

Mr. John Pearson will be the new Chief Executive Officer for the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley, Shire President Elsia Archer, announced at the conclusion of a special Council meeting held today.

After an intensive recruitment process with a strong field of candidates including numerous applicants from the Eastern States, Cr Archer announced that Council was extremely happy with its decision. “It has been a tremendously challenging process spanning some months however we are delighted with the decision and look forward to continued growth within our region with John by our side,” Cr Archer stated. “John’s knowledge about Local Government and the Kimberley is extensive and his skills will greatly assist Council’s future,” Cr Archer continued.

Mr Pearson and his family have been in the Kimberley for nearly 7 years, with over 3 years spent in Halls Creek. He moved to Derby in 2002 to take the position as Executive Manager, Corporate Services.

“John’s performance during his term as Executive Manager was outstanding and he assisted Council in clearly identifying a strategic and financial plan for the future,” Cr Archer said. “We are extremely proud of our accomplishments over the last 4 years and have no doubt in John’s ability to lead the staff in delivering and implementing Council decisions.”

In accepting the position, Mr Pearson said he said he was looking forward to the challenge of being the Chief Executive Officer and indicated he would continue to work closely with the Councillors, the community and staff to progress and develop the unique culture of our Shire. “The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has enormous opportunities available and to be involved in cultivating some of these prospects makes me extremely happy. “ Mr Pearson said.

Crime Partnership Launched

8th September 2005

Minister for Community Safety Michelle Roberts was treated to a performance by Red Alert, Derby’s newest youth band yesterday during the launch of the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley’s new Partnership Agreement on Crime Prevention and Community Safety. Despite some initial stage nerves and technical problems the band treated the crowd which included Commissioner of Police Karl O’Callaghan, Carol Martin, Member for Kimberley, District Superintendent Steve Robbins, Shire Councillors and many representatives from community organisations and government agencies across the Shire to three songs, one of which was written by the young people.

“A focus on working with young people to improve their safety and diversionary activities to prevent involvement in crime will be a key feature of the Shire’s new role, administering and coordinating crime prevention and community safety initiatives,” said Cr. Elsia Archer, Shire President.

“We have always been concerned about crime prevention and community safety providing youth services for young people at risk and hosting programs designed to prevent family violence and abuse, the only program of its kind managed by local government, and we also make our communities safer by upgrading security for facilities and things like street lighting. However this new partnership agreement with the state government will see us take a lead role in bringing together local stakeholders to plan for and action future activity in this area.”
