Ashley Street Recreation Precinct - Derby

29th September 2006

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has engaged Anna Bonython of Bonython Consulting to develop, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, an organisational structure and operational model for the Ashley Street Recreation Precinct.

“It is expected that this model will support and enhance the operation and management of recreational facilities at the Ashley Street Recreation Centre Precinct into the future”  said Shire President, Elsia Archer.

Issues the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley wishes to have addressed include:

  1. The sustainability of sporting clubs in Derby

  2. Identification of  strategies which will minimise the dependency on volunteer labour

  3. Provision of a structure to ensure the Shire is able to meet its obligations in accordance with the Local Government Act (1995)

  4. Development of  strategies which will assist sporting groups to appropriately maintain assets and past investments

  5. Provision of a framework that will generate the best possible outcomes for the whole community with regard to recreation facilities and opportunities.

An open forum session was held on Wed 27th Sept with representatives of sporting clubs and other groups that operate from the Ashley Street Recreation Precinct.

Cr. Archer announced that a Working Group has been formed to help develop an appropriate model and  comprises one representative from each of the following clubs:

Sportsmen’s Club

Golf Club

Turf club

Rodeo & Horseriders Association

Netball Club

Basketball Club

Bowls club

Tennis Club

Cricket Club

Garnduwa

Councillor Ross Sullivan and the new Executive Manager, Community Development Ian Mumford are also on the Working Group.

The first meeting of the Working Group will be on Tuesday 10th October.  A second open forum session will be held in early November to present recommendations from the Working Group to stakeholders of the Ashley Street Recreation Centre Precinct.

“It is expected that Working Party recommendations will be considered by Shire Councillors at their November, 2006  meeting” said Cr. Archer.
