The sports-mad West Kimberley has been granted nearly a million dollars in funding to upgrade sports and recreation facilities, in a windfall the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley CEO Amanda Dexter has described as “fantastic”.
“In the West Kimberley being outside and participating in sports is a beloved way of life. I’m so pleased our residents will be able to benefit from this very generous state funding,” said Dexter.
“Time outdoors and getting active is beneficial for everyone, so I think this is an investment all our residents will relish in the long-term. We may also see more state, national and international sporting talents coming up through the ranks with new and improved facilities to train on - especially for our women and girls.”
The grants from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) will see a major $900,000 upgrade of the Looma Community Oval, including new lighting and change rooms.
The upgraded facilities would be more female friendly, as well as allowing the oval to support home games.
$17,717 would be directed towards new main arena lighting at the Derby Rodeo Grounds, as well as $90,265 to the Nookanbah Community Oval.
A condition of the grant would be that all project upgrades would provide opportunities for diversity, and be in line with modern standards for accessibility and inclusion.
“The McGowan government is committed to developing high-quality sport and recreation facilities to help keep Western Australians healthy and active,” said Tony Buti, the Minister for Sport and Recreation.
“It’s fantastic to see so many sport and recreation projects across the State benefitting from this funding, which will help increase participation in sport and recreation.”
