This morning Derby/West Kimberley Shire President Geoff Haerewa  met “at length” with the Minister for Corrective Services  Hon. Bill Johnston and Attorney General Hon. John Quigley (pictured above).

Top of the agenda was how to tackle escalating juvenile crime issues in the Kimberley.

“This was the most productive, fruitful discussion I have had with Ministers responsible for juvenile crime and justice in the last four years,” Haerewa said.

Other meeting attendees included Labour party MP Divina D'Anna, as well as representatives from police.

“For the first time, the Ministers are asking the community to come up with regional solutions for regional issues. They are embracing the idea of utilising that profound local knowledge and experience of the Kimberley and its people.”

“This is so empowering and something we’ve been campaigning for years,” said Haerewa, who added many local-led solutions were in the pipeline, but needed State Government support and resources to get off the ground.

“They want action, and they want the experts in this field – locals – to lead the charge. The Attorney General promised he would return to the Kimberley for more consultations soon. He has promised to come up here and address these issues personally, as a matter of priority.”
