Shire congratulates all winners of 50th anniversary Kimberley Art and Photographic Prize

Joshua Cocking has taken out the major art prize category of the 50th anniversary of the Kimberley Art and Photographic Prize (KAPP), which was announced at the exhibition opening night on Saturday 3 July 2021 at the Derby Airport.

Joshua, a Broome painter, was declared the overall winner of the $10,000 acquisitive art category by the judges for his self-portrait, ’14 Years Remote’.

Broome photographer Rocky McKenzie won the overall photographic acquisitive prize of $2500, with his image, 'Our ancestors live among us'.

The acquisitive prizes, proudly sponsored by the Shire of Derby West/Kimberley, become the property of the Shire on behalf of the community and displayed publically.

Shire President Geoff Haerewa congratulated the overall winners, other category winners and everyone who contributed to making the fantastic evening a success.

“It was an incredible night and fantastic to see all the major winning pieces over the past 50 years in the one spot at the Derby Airport, along with well over 100 entries on display from this year’s exhibition,” Cr Haerewa said.

“Approximately 300 people enjoyed opening night and the exhibition continues every day from 10am – 4pm until Sunday 18 July 2021 – don’t forget to have your say in the People’s Choice for the art and photographic awards by then, which will be announced on Friday 23 July 2021.

“All pieces in the exhibition are for sale except for the overall winners of the art and photographic prize.

“We really appreciate the hard work and creative eye of our judges Sharon Tassicker, Sarah Landro, Mark Kraljevich; and curator Jessica Bidewell.”

This year we received 29 entries in the photographic categories, and 108 pieces combined from the other artwork categories.

Head judge Sharon Tassicker reflected:

“We thought that the quality of the art in all sections was excellent. We were happy with the very considered choices we made, choices that reflect many aspects of the West Kimberley and draw our attention to the artists’ experiences and what they want to share with us. The exhibition presents a wonderful opportunity for the public to enjoy seeing a range of art styles and media and to purchase something memorable.”
