Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Councillor Honoured

Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Councillor Peter McCumstie was among the twenty nine Local Government Elected Members and Officers recently honoured as part of the 2019 Local Government Convention held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre over 7-9 August.

Councillor McCumstie was one of the twelve individuals to receive a Long and Loyal Service Award in recognition of outstanding long and loyal service to Local Government.

Councillor McCumstie has served on the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley Council for twenty one years, including 1992-2001 as Shire President. Councillor McCumstie has also been a local government representative on the Kimberley Development Commission (Chairman) and the WA Local Government’s Association Kimberley Zone.

During his time as Shire President Councillor McCumstie fought tirelessly to have the Derby Port reopened after being closed by the State Government. This was achieved by the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley undertaking operations, providing an economic base for the town and recreational access for residents and visitors.

Councillor McCumstie has worked extensively with the 54 Indigenous Communities located within the Shire. His working relationships and knowledge in this area is an invaluable resource that he brings to his role.

Councillor McCumstie has continually sought improvement within the community namely to secure a strong economic, social and healthy future for all the communities with our Shire. He champions promotion of cultural events in this remote area.
