Courteney Perry, Pene Brown, Romy Wilson, Mary Aiken and the Derby Speedway Club were recognised as part of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards on Australia Day 2019 by the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley.

Undoubtedly community champions, the award winners are people and organisations we can all be inspired by. Every community has a champion and you can nominate your community champion now for the Community Citizen of the Year Awards.  With your help they can receive a well deserved ‘pat on the back’ on Australia Day next year.

Shire President Geoff Haerewa said that, together with Auspire – Australia Day Council WA, Local Governments are calling on Western Australians to nominate people or groups from their community who epitomise active citizenship and Australian spirit. Over 240 awards were presented on Australia Day in 2019 by local councils throughout WA.

These prestigious awards are designed to recognise local residents who demonstrate active citizenship and qualities of leadership, inspiration and community participation, resulting in enhanced community life.

The four nomination categories are:

  • Community Citizen of the Year Award
  • Community Citizen of the Year Award (Senior) for a person over 65 years
  • Community Citizen of the Year Award (Youth) for a person under 25 years
  • Active Citizenship Award for a community group or event
