Outback Football

By Mark Norval

This sculpture is a tribute to all of the amazing indigenous AFL footballers that our nation has produced. The helmet like heads harp back to the indigenous pearl divers and are a reminder that Derby as well as Broome had a pearling fleet which fished the rich tidal waters of King Sound. Midge Wilkinson scoured the Derby marsh for rusty car wrecks from which most of this sculpture is made. This sculpture was initially made for the View to Asia sculpture exhibition at Cable Beach in Broome in 2012.

It was the second sculpture installed in Derby’s Sculpture on the Marsh project and it was placed in its current position in 2019.
