Local Laws

Local laws govern activities on land that is owned or managed by the Shire, as well as certain activities on private land within our boundaries. Local laws are created to address the unique needs of communities and are enforced by local governments.
Bushfire Brigades
The purpose of bushfire brigade laws is to provide the legal framework for the establishment, organisation, management, and funding of bush fire brigades to effectively carry out fire prevention and suppression activities and protect life and property.

Cemeteries
Cemetery laws provide orderly management and respectful treatment of burial grounds by regulating burials, managing cemetery operations (like plans and records), ensuring accessibility, establishing rules for conduct (preventing vandalism), and licensing related services (funeral directors). Their main purpose is to ensure deceased individuals are treated with dignity, communities have designated places for remembrance, and disputes over graves are minimized, preserving heritage for future generations.

Dogs
The purpose of dog local laws is to promote responsible dog ownership, ensure community safety, and manage dog-related issues like nuisance barking or waste, by extending state laws with specific local rules on confinement, registration, exercise areas, and numbers of dogs allowed, creating a cleaner, safer, and more harmonious environment for everyone.

Extractive Industries
The purpose of local laws for extractive industries (such as quarrying for stone, gravel, sand, etc.) is to establish requirements and conditions with which these operations must comply.

Local Government Property
The objective of this local law is to provide for the regulation, control and management of activities and facilities on local government property, thoroughfares and public places within the district.

Health
The Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911 requires a local authority to adopt their own Local Law to carry out the provisions of the Act within its own district.
The Health Local Law controls such matters as the keeping of animals and poultry, the control of vermin and other nuisances, maintenance of houses, disposal of refuse, control of infectious diseases and licensing of certain premises.

Standing Orders
The objective of this local law is to provide rules, procedures and guidelines to assist in the good conduct of meetings of the Council, committees and the standards to be observed by persons attending such meetings.

Activities on Thoroughfares and Trading in Thoroughfares and Public Places
The purpose of "Activities on Thoroughfares and Trading in Public Places" local laws is to manage and regulate activities (like signs, verge treatments, events, shopping trolleys, animals) in public spaces (streets, footpaths, parks) to ensure public safety, accessibility, amenity, and order, balancing commercial needs with community use by setting clear rules, requiring permits, and controlling potential hazards or obstructions
