The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley held its monthly September Ordinary Council Meeting yesterday in Fitzroy Crossing. This meeting marked a special occasion as it was the last formal Council meeting for Amanda Dexter, who has served as our Shire CEO for the past five years

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley extends its congratulations to the Fitzroy River Bridge Project for being awarded WA Project of the Year at the WA Engineering Excellence Awards held this week at Optus Stadium.

To accommodate a new requirement of the WA Local Government Act, every WA local government is now required to have an independent person sit on its Executive Officer (CEO) Selection Panel. The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley therefore now invites interested people to sit on it’s CEO Selection Panel. The role of the Panel is to facilitate the recruitment and selection process for the Shire’s new CEO. The Panel will consist of several current councillors, and the appointed independent person and it will be in place until the CEO appointment is made.

It is with a heavy heart and mixed emotions that Amanda Dexter, announces her resignation effective 11 October 2024. Amanda will be returning to her home town of Carnarvon, taking on the exciting opportunity as CEO at the Shire.

LEADERS from multiple agencies across the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley met with senior Australian Army personnel today ahead of a major local training exercise. The ADF’s Exercise Austral Shield kicks off over the coming days and will see hundreds of soldiers and their armoured and heavy vehicles moving around town for the next week as they fight a fictitious enemy role-played by other Army soldiers.

Recently, a decision was made by the Director of Liquor Licensing to adjust liquor restrictions within our community, following an inquiry into alcohol-related harm in Derby and the sale of packaged liquor. The inquiry, which involved consultation with various stakeholders, including licensees, calls for more liquor restrictions, intended to prevent and reduce problematic alcohol related behaviour and harm.
