Amendment to Council Meeting Dates for May, June, August and September 2025

Welcome to the first of what I intend to be regular updates. I have been appointed as the Commissioner of the Shire of Derby West Kimberley (SDWK) and officially took up my role on Tuesday, 22 April 2025. My job is to act as the Council, to exercise all duties and functions ordinarily carried out by the President and Council members ensuring the continued proper functioning of Local Government in preparation for the return of a democratically elected Council in October 2025.

Shire of Derby/West Kimberley welcomes the appointment of Jeff Gooding PSM as Commissioner, announced today by the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Hannah Beazley MLA.

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has received a development application to use and/or develop land for the following purpose and public comments are invited.

The Shire would like to advise the community some services will be impacted on Friday 4 April due to staff development and moving of offices. Due to varying times, please refer to the below for facility-specific hours.

In accordance with regulation 12(3) of the Local Government (Administration) Regulations 1996, notice is hereby given that the Ordinary Council Meeting scheduled for Thursday, 27 March 2025 in Fitzroy Crossing at 11:00am has been cancelled. The next Ordinary Council meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, 24 April 2025 at 5:30pm in the Derby Council Chambers.

We're moving! Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is relocating its Administration Centre into the former Visitor Centre building, providing a one-stop shop for administration services, Department of Transport licensing and tourism information - making it easier for everyone to access the services they need in one central place.

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley acknowledges the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Council.

With the recent rains following the wet season, grass growth in and around the Derby townsite has been rapid and we understand the concerns regarding these areas. Our Shire works crew is actively working to manage this, starting with key public areas like the main street, oval and parks to ensure they remain safe and enjoyable for everyone. Rest assured the team are working hard!

This International Women's Day, we hosted a morning tea to celebrate the phenomenal strength, resilience, and achievements of the incredible women in our community.

From Monday, 3rd March 2025, the Broome – Derby flight schedule is changing to better connect with major flights from Broome.

Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is pleased to announce the appointment of Tamara Clarkson as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). At a Special Meeting of Council held on Thursday 20 February 2025, Council received and endorsed the recommendations of the CEO Recruitment Panel to appoint Tamara.

The Library team is excited to share our 2025 library program, all about fun, friendship and building literacy skills, full of activities for little ones through to adults in a welcoming environment for all to connect and enjoy our library, including a brand new Baby Bounce session on Monday mornings.

For the last 6 months, Council has been trialling new opening hours opening 5 days per week and Saturday morning. As promised, we are now checking in with customers prior to making these hours permanent.

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is pleased to announce that it has been allocated $750,000 from the State Government’s Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme (RBFS) to undertake a major upgrade of the main recreational boat ramp and dedicated rescue ramp at Derby.

Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is proud to acknowledge the exceptional achievements and contributions of Dani Cornish, whose career in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has spanned six years of remote work supporting defence operations across Australia.

Derby’s volunteers were the stars of the evening at the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley’s Thank a Volunteer Dinner, supported by Department of Communities, held on Saturday night at the Derby Airport. The event honoured the vital contributions of local volunteers, with five awards presented to individuals who have gone above and beyond in service to the community.
