15 August 2025 For immediate release
Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is pleased to provide the community with an update on several important road projects currently underway or in planning across the region.
Fairbairn Street Upgrade – Detailed Design and Collaboration
The Shire has secured $112,500 in funding from the State Government as part of the State Black Spot Program, to progress detailed design work for the upgrade of Fairbairn Street in Derby during the 2025/26 financial year. This stage will also include the lowering of services if required.
A proposed plan has already been drafted, with the design focusing on accessibility and safety of users. The Shire will work closely with Derby District High School and Derby Bus Services to ensure the final design meets the needs of students, school staff and local transport providers.
A further $1.47 million has been allocated for construction in the 2026/27 financial year.
Acting CEO Wayne Neate said the project is a result of significant proactive planning to secure opportunities to support the town’s growth.
“We’re planning for the future of our community with these projects. The Fairbairn Street upgrade reflects our commitment to safety, accessibility and working in partnership with local schools and transport providers,” he said.
Jetty Road Now Under Main Roads WA Management
Effective from 1 August 2025, Jetty Road, which leads to the Derby Wharf, has officially been transferred to Main Roads Western Australia, who will now be responsible for the maintenance and future upkeep of the road.
The Shire is currently working alongside Main Roads to undertake improvement works in the coming months, ensuring a smooth and safe transition of responsibility.
Acting CEO Wayne Neate said the handover is the most sustainable way to ensure Jetty Road remains accessible and well-maintained for all users of the port.
“This transition ensures long-term maintenance and improvements are managed by the agency best equipped to oversee such a critical freight and access route, as well as one that holds real community value to our residents and visitors.” he said.
Gravel Road Maintenance – Tenders Open
As part of our commitment to maintaining regional road infrastructure, the Shire currently has two tenders open for maintenance works on several gravel roads including:
- Cherrabun Road
- Fossil Downs Road
- Gee Gully Road
- Camballin–Myroodah Road
