Derby Jetty Walkway – Tree Planting Pilot

We are launching a Tree Planting Pilot project along the Derby Jetty Walkway. The pilot is aimed at making the space greener, cooler and more enjoyable for community.

The is a small-scale, evidence-based initiative designed to assess performance of a range of plant species. We will evaluate plant survival rates, maintenance requirements, and shading potential of coastal, salt-tolerant, heat-resilient species.

Commencing from April 2026, a selection of plant species will be planted in designated areas along the walkway. Throughout the duration of the pilot, the Shire will be actively monitoring and reviewing the progress. Insights gained from the pilot will be used to guide future planting pilots throughout the community.

For more information please contact the Shire on (08) 9191 0999 or email sdwk@sdwk.wa.gov.au

Latest Update: Site preparation will commence on Thursday 23 April 2026.

FAQ'S

Why is the Shire running the Tree Planting Pilot?

The Derby Jetty Walkway is a heavily used public asset connecting residents, visitors, fishers, and families to the jetty precinct. The walkway is exposed, hot, and lacks shade. Community feedback consistently highlights discomfort during hotter months.

This is a small-scale, evidence-based initiative designed to test the survival, maintenance needs, and shading potential of coastal, salt-tolerant, heat-resilient plants along a selected section of the walkway. This low-risk pilot responds directly to community concerns about heat, comfort, and walkability.

Findings will inform whether the approach should be expanded along the full length of the walkway.

How long will the pilot project run for?

The pilot is scheduled to run for 12 – 18 months.

How will the plants be watered and maintained?

A temporary watering plan is in place to support the establishment of the plants. The Shire will be monitoring plant survival and growth monthly over the duration of the pilot.

What type of plants have been chosen?

The pilot introduces hardy coastal species selected with horticulturalist guidance to determine what can survive in Derby’s extreme climate. A full list of selected species is located here: Derby Jetty Walkway Plant Selection

Why have these plants been chosen?

Species selection and planting design have been developed with an expert specialised in arid-zone coastal plants. These species have been chosen for their ability to tolerate heat, salt, wind and minimal water.

Will the Derby Jetty Walkway be closed during this period?

Access to the Derby Jetty Walkway will not be affected during this time.

What benefits will this pilot bring to the community?

The pilot aims to increase comfort, safety and accessibility of the walkway, particularly for Elders, families and visitors. If successful, the pilot will inform a broader greening strategy to create a cooler, greener and more inviting jetty precinct.

How can I see the progress?

The Shire will share updates, photos and monitoring data on the project webpage so that community can follow progress throughout the pilot.

How can I get involved?

Community members are invited to be part of the journey, helping us monitor the progress of plants by uploading photos and videos. At the conclusion of the project, the Shire will use your photos and videos as part of reviewing and assessing the outcomes of the pilot.
