The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley shares the community’s concerns and is actively working on the state of Derby Nicholson Square Oval, and pushing for home games to be held in Derby for the upcoming season.
Following the impacts of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie and associated flooding, Derby Nicholson Square Oval suffered significant damage to its water source and field. Following the damage, the Shire promptly ordered two very large (75,000L) water tanks at the beginning of 2024 to mitigate the effects of the damage. However, there is a long lead time for the production of the tanks and this will see them arrive in June 2024 with installation immediately following their arrival.
Despite these setbacks, the Shire remains committed to returning the oval to optimal condition. We understand the importance of having a functional and safe playing field for our community, especially for the sport of AFL, which plays a significant role in the lives of local players and future talents.
“Our Shire is and always will remain committed to supporting our Football community and in saying this we completely understand the role that football in Derby plays in enabling our youth and adults to compete at the highest possible level in our Shire. Although it is a constant struggle to maintain our infrastructure we will continue to work with all parties to ensure that we get the best outcomes for our community and in this instance that means supporting our Derby Tigers Football Club, men and women, to enjoy the game they love” says Shire President Peter McCumstie.
The Shire is actively working with the West Kimberley Football League (WKFL) as well as the WA Football Commission and the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries (DLGSCI) to expedite the process of returning the field to playable condition for the upcoming season.
“The Derby Tigers Football Club (DTFC) feels aggrieved by the decision made by the WKFL and we are now working through the appeal process, we will also work with the Shire to resolve any issues with the oval” said Brett Manado – DTFC President.
We recognise the significance of having home games in Derby not only for the sport of AFL but also for the morale and engagement of our community. Equal opportunities for players to compete on local grounds are essential for fostering a vibrant sports culture in Derby and across the Kimberley region.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of all stakeholders involved as we work diligently to address this issue. We will provide further updates, to keep the community informed.
