Derby Recreation Precinct Master Plan
Overview
Sports and recreation in Derby and the West Kimberley has historically and continues to build community connection. As Derby continues to grow and evolve, it is important that our recreation infrastructure meets the needs of current and future generations.
Many of the existing sports and recreation facilities in Derby have been developed over time and while they serve the community well, several challenges have emerged including ageing infrastructure, changing recreation needs, increased demand for shared and multi-use spaces, accessibility improvements, and the need for coordinated long-term planning.
To guide the future of sports and recreation in Derby, Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has commenced the development of the Derby Recreation Precinct Master Plan. The Master Plan will provide a strategic framework for future investment, helping to ensure recreation infrastructure is sustainable, well-planned, and aligned with community priorities. It will also support future funding opportunities and the staged delivery of projects over time.
The vision being explored through the Master Plan is the creation of a modern, inclusive and connected recreation precinct that supports participation, wellbeing, cultural activities, community events and regional tourism opportunities. Potential future improvements may include enhanced sporting facilities, upgraded amenities, improved accessibility, community gathering spaces, better connectivity throughout the precinct and opportunities for shared-use infrastructure.
Following a public tender process, advertised in accordance with legislative requirements, Tender T4-25/26 Derby Recreation Precinct Master Plan was awarded to REALM Studios at the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 21 May 2026.
Community input will play a vital role in shaping the Master Plan. Through engagement with residents, sporting clubs, community organisations, Traditional Owners, local businesses and other stakeholders, the project will develop a shared vision for a precinct that reflects Derby’s unique identity and supports the Shire’s vision of “A welcoming community with opportunities to thrive.”
The Master Plan is currently underway, with consultation, site assessment and planning activities taking place throughout 2026 and 2027. Project updates, engagement opportunities and key milestones will be published on this page as the project progresses.
