Port of Derby Operations Transition

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is preparing for the transition of Port of Derby operations to the Kimberley Port Authority. We know the community values recreation, fishing, walking and connection to Country. We want to reassure you that community access will continue.

This transition relates to Port operations only. It does not change how residents, families, visitors or tourism operators use the jetty or the coastline. Our priority is to keep the community informed, protect cultural values and ensure the transition is clear, respectful and well understood.

“We are committed to protecting the community interests of the Shire throughout the entire transition.”

“Community access will continue throughout and after the transition.”

What is happening?

Operational control of the Port of Derby is transitioning from the Shire to Kimberley Port Authority.

How will this impact access to the Port?

Community access will continue throughout and after the transition. Visit our website for clear information and FAQs.

What is not changing?

Community access continues. Recreational use continues. Visitor and tourism access continues.

These activities are not affected because the transition relates to Port operations, not public access.

Why is the transition occurring?

The transition aligns Derby with regional port governance. It reduces Shire risk and operational costs. It supports long-term planning and investment for the Port and the community.

Will the Traditional Owners be consulted?

Traditional Owners will be engaged early and meaningfully throughout the transition. Cultural values and heritage will remain central to all decisions and communication.

Where can I find more information and have a say?

Community members can speak directly with the Shire at the two upcoming pop-up stalls. These sessions provide an opportunity to ask questions, share feedback and receive clear information about the Port of Derby Operations Transition.
