KIMBERLEY SHIRE THANKS FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT FOR CRITICAL FLOOD RELIEF FUNDING

The Shire of Derby/ West Kimberley welcomes the support of the Federal and State Governments through the jointly funded Commonwealth – State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Announcements over the last two days of freight subsidies for Kimberley businesses and funding to deliver temporary accommodation for the residents of the Fitzroy Valley who were impacted by the recent flooding of the Fitzroy (Martuwarra) River, will go a long way to relieving the pressures Kimberley communities face during this time of disruption.

The Kimberley Region has been hard hit by the unprecedented flooding. Federal and State Government support on this scale has given the Shire great confidence in the commitment to helping our local communities gain strength to face the rebuild.

Shire President Geoff Haerewa “The Flooding has affected many families and is a difficult time, any support to find a new normal for families to regroup and plan for the rebuild is greatly appreciated.”

“We know that it is important for families to be reunited and able to go home to country – the temporary housing funding will support this to happen”.

The Region has been supported by Emergency Services and Australian Defence Force. Ministers and Chiefs of Staff have visited to see firsthand the devastation experienced.

“I would like to personally thank the WA Premier, Ministers and our local member Divina D’Anna for responding with these critical practical support packages after hearing firsthand the challenges we are experiencing” Shire President Geoff Haerewa said.

“The visit to Derby Friday by the Premier Mark McGowan and Minister Rita Saffioti to announce the preferred proponent of the Fitzroy (Martuwarra) River Bridge replacement is a further example of the ongoing support and commitment of the State Government.

“While we understand that the recovery process will take time, the Shire is committed to working in partnership with the State and Federal Government to ensure the communities are rebuilt to be better prepared in the future.”
