Fitzroy Valley shortlisted for Keep Australia Beautiful Council Award

26 October 2023                                                                                                            For immediate release

The Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is proud to hear that Fitzroy Crossing has been shortlisted for a 2023 Keep Australia Beautiful Award Council award, in the Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards – in the Community Action and Wellbeing category.

Shire President Peter McCumstie said it is wonderful to see the community of Fitzroy Crossing recognised given the inspiring efforts the community has made in working together since the devasting floods in January 2023.

“The Fitzroy Valley community has demonstrated outstanding resilience and has positively embraced the flood challenges and opportunities, which has for example, seen local people start cleaning and rubbish collection businesses, gaining skills across the number of different rebuild projects and creating long lasting employment opportunities,” Cr McCumstie said.

“We wish Fitzroy all the best at the gala lunch awards in November when the winners will be announced,” Cr McCumstie said.

30 Western Australian regional and remote communities have been chosen as finalists in the 2023 KABC Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards.

The awards, in its 54th year, highlight and recognise regional and remote communities for their efforts in effective litter prevention activities, sustainable projects and positive environmental outcomes.

KABC judges visited entrants across regional and remote Western Australia in September to witness the diversity of projects being carried out.

The judging process enables an understanding of the impact of the submitted projects and for the entrants to showcase the inspiring sustainability initiatives.

The nine award categories include:

  • Litter Prevention
  • Young Legends
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Environmental Education
  • Heritage and Culture
  • Community Action and Wellbeing
  • General Appearance
  • Community Containers for Change
  • Waste management

A gala luncheon will be held on Friday 24 November 2023 at Frasers, Kings Park in Perth to announce the category winners.
