Disability access and inclusion is set for renewed focus with Council endorsing the Shire’s new Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2022 – 20227 (DAIP) at the June 2022 Ordinary Council Meeting.

The DAIP will assist the Shire to make improvements to Shire operated services, facilities, events and programs to ensure people with disability have the same opportunities as other community members to access them. Focusing on seven key areas the plan outlines overarching strategies and an action plan to support the improvements to be made. Initiatives identified in the updated DAIP include;

  • Improved disability access to the lap pool at the Derby Memorial Swimming Pool.
  • Increased publication of information about the accessibility element of events and facilities.
  • Support of disability awareness events, such as the International Day of People with Disability.
  • Support event organisers to make their activities more accessible.
  • Ensuring documents and publications are made available in variety of formats.
  • Awareness training and resources for staff.

All public authorities in Western Australia are required to have a DAIP, a document which must be reviewed at least every 5 years. The Shire is also required to provide the Department of Communities a progress report each year outlining the implementation of the plan.
