5 August 2025 For immediate release
Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is working closely with emergency services following a fire that impacted areas near the Fitzroy Crossing township on Saturday, 2 August 2025.
The fire began between the Buruwa and Junjuwa communities and quickly moved towards Junjuwa and the Fitzroy Crossing Airport, driven by strong and unpredictable winds. Emergency services responded rapidly, with fire crews working to protect community housing and critical infrastructure. The fire crossed into the Fitzroy Crossing cemetery area and threatened nearby pastoral stations. Volunteer firefighters worked to control the fire under extremely challenging conditions into the evening, working to contain the spread and prevent further damage.
The Shire can confirm all fire mitigation measures, including firebreaks and emergency access, were in place ahead of the incident. These preparations helped crews respond quickly and the Shire acknowledges the outstanding efforts of those involved.
The Shire is working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the fire and will support any actions required as a result of the investigation. Damage assessments are now underway, including to the airport fence and cemetery and any further updates will be provided as the recovery progresses.
