Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is proud to announce the commencement of the Derby Recreation Precinct Master Plan, a major step toward creating a modern, inclusive and vibrant recreation hub for the Derby community.
Supported through funding under the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program, the Master Plan will guide the long-term future of sport, recreation, youth, cultural and community infrastructure in Derby, helping shape a shared vision for generations to come. The program supports regional communities to plan and deliver place based, multipurpose precincts through partnerships and long-term investment planning.
The Master Plan will explore opportunities to modernise, consolidate and strengthen Derby’s recreation and community assets into a connected and accessible precinct that reflects the needs and aspirations of the local community. The planning process is intended to establish a clear long-term vision to guide future investment, staging and funding opportunities for the precinct. Importantly, the project will be community led, with extensive consultation to occur throughout the planning process.
A staged engagement program will commence shortly, providing residents, sporting clubs, Aboriginal organisations, community groups and key stakeholders with opportunities to help shape the future of the precinct and ensure local voices are central to the outcome.
The precinct is expected to consider a range of facilities and opportunities aimed at improving participation, accessibility, wellbeing, social connection and economic opportunities, while ensuring Derby remains equipped with fit for purpose recreational infrastructure into the future.
Shire President Peter McCumstie said the project represents an exciting opportunity to create a stronger, more connected future for Derby.
“This Master Plan is about more than infrastructure — it is about creating a place where community comes together. Through meaningful engagement and long-term planning, we are working toward a recreation precinct that supports sport, culture, community events and wellbeing for current and future generations.”
Chief Executive Officer Tamara Clarkson said community participation will be critical to the project’s success.
“We want this to be a precinct designed by the community, for the community. We strongly encourage residents, clubs and organisations to participate in the consultation process and help shape a shared vision for Derby.”
Community consultation activities and opportunities to participate will be announced in the coming weeks.
