Statement from the Chief Executive Officer and Commissioner
At the Ordinary Council Meeting held Thursday, 31 July 2025, Shire of Derby/West Kimberley conditionally authorised the commencement of negotiations around the future management of the Derby Port.
To clarify, we understand and support the Derby community view that continued access to the wharf and boat ramps and involvement in future port trade issues, along with existing sub leases, are not negotiable.
We have listened to the community’s valued feedback about being afforded an opportunity to provide input prior to any final decisions about the port lease. As a result, we have decided to engage further with the community before any final decisions are made.
These additions add to the commitment already made that following negotiations with Kimberley Port Authority, a draft agreement will be brought back to a future Council Meeting.
We trust that this amendment adds to our unwavering commitment to negotiate a strong outcome that meets the needs of the Derby community now and into the future, while also ensuring that the severe financial burden and liabilities that currently accrue, are released from the Shire in the interests of long-term sustainability.
