Shire of Derby/West Kimberley has prepared a Draft Local Planning Strategy to help guide land use planning and development across the Shire.
The Strategy looks ahead over the next 15 years and sets out how future growth and change can be managed across The Shire. It will also provide the strategic basis for future planning decisions and the ongoing implementation of Local Planning Scheme No. 9.
The Draft Strategy has been endorsed by the Western Australian Planning Commission for public advertising and is now available for community and stakeholder comment.
Planning for the next 15 years
The Local Planning Strategy brings together the key planning issues, opportunities and priorities that are expected to shape the Shire into the future.
It considers matters such as where future growth should occur, how housing and employment needs can be supported, how infrastructure and services can respond to change, and how important environmental and cultural values can be recognised through the planning framework.
The Strategy is centred around the vision:
“A place where people want to live, invest, visit and return to.”
Its planning directions and actions are grouped across four broad themes:
- community, urban growth and settlement;
- economy and employment;
- environment; and
- infrastructure.
What does the Strategy do?
Rather than determining individual development proposals, the Local Planning Strategy provides the longer-term direction for how the Shire’s planning framework should evolve.
It identifies planning actions to be worked through over the short, medium and long term, including matters that will require coordination with State Government agencies and other organisations.
