Nicholson Oval to close temporarily for lighting upgrade
Shire of Derby/West Kimberley advises the community that Nicholson Oval will be closed temporarily while works are undertaken to replace the existing oval lighting system.
The closure is necessary to allow for the safe removal of the existing infrastructure and installation of a new modern, energy-efficient lighting system that will restore reliable lighting and support the ongoing use of the facility by local sporting clubs and community groups. The project forms part of Council's commitment to improving community infrastructure and restoring the full functionality of one of Derby’s key sporting facilities.
For the safety of contractors, sporting clubs and members of the public, access to the oval will be restricted for the duration of the construction works. Community members are asked to respect all signage, barriers and temporary closures in place throughout the project. The oval will be closed from Wednesday 8 July 2026 and is estimated to be re-opened in November 2026.
Chief Executive Officer, Tamara Clarkson said the long-awaited improvements would deliver long-term benefits for the community.
"We appreciate the community's patience while these important works are carried out. The new lighting system will provide a safer, more reliable facility that can better support local sport, recreation and community activities for many years to come."
The Shire will continue to work closely with user groups to minimise disruption wherever possible and will provide updates on project progress as works advance.
Further information regarding the closure and project timeline will be made available through the Shire's website and social media channels.
