Shire of Derby/West Kimberley is pleased to announce that at the April 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting, Council awarded the tender for the replacement of the oval lighting system at Nicholson Oval, Derby. This marks a significant step in restoring the full use of the facility for the community.
The project has attracted strong community interest, with local clubs, players and the wider community seeking updates following issues with the existing, outdated system. The existing lighting system has been progressively failing in recent years, limiting evening usage of the facility for training, competition and community events.
Following a comprehensive procurement process, the contract has been awarded to Kalamunda Electrics, who will deliver a completely new modern, energy efficient lighting system designed to meet current sporting standards and improved reliability.
Tamara Clarkson, Chief Executive Officer said the decision enabled much-needed improvements to be delivered for the community.
“This is a highly anticipated outcome for our community. We understand how important this facility is for local sport and community recreation, and we are pleased to be moving ahead with a solution that will restore safe and reliable lighting to the oval.” Tamara Clarkson, Chief Executive Officer said.
Works are expected to be completed in early 2027. Once completed, the upgraded lighting system will support increased participation, extended usage hours and improved safety for all users.
This project is part of the WA Government’s PlayOn WA, an exciting initiative to deliver 2,030 community infrastructure items across WA by 2030.
The Nicholson Oval lighting replacement aligns with the Shire’s broader focus on maintaining and improving community infrastructure to support liveability and long-term use of public spaces. It follows recent lighting and fencing upgrades at Fitzroy Crossing Town Oval.
